Hello, fellow teacher! I love reading Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things with my students and I hope you do too. This book makes a great novel unit for the whole class or for small reading groups. It works well with third grade independent reading levels, but can be easily used as a read aloud or for advanced literature circles in second grade. Enjoy! --Ms. Beth Grade level Equivalent: 3.3 Lexile Measure: 600L DRA: 40 Guided Reading: Q This novel unit includes: •Literat
Glory Be by Augusta Scattergood is a great story for upper elementary and middle school students. Glory, an opinionated eleven year-old in 1964 Mississippi, is very concerned when the community pool shuts down shortly after Northerners arrive to register Black voters and help integrate the town. Her concern for the swimming pool shifts as she comes to realize the disparities and hatred present in her community. It is historical fiction, based on the author’s experience as a child in Mississippi
Rump: the True Story of Rumpelstilskin by Liesl Shurtliff is a great fractured fairy tale for upper elementary students. Shurtliff turns the classic character of Rumpelstiltskin into a sympathetic protagonist an adventure to break a curse and discover his true name. It’s a funny story with a wide cast of likeable characters, while including thought-provoking themes like friendship, greed, and bullying. I highly recommend it to students that enjoyed Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman, Escape fr

The Giants and the Joneses by Julia Donaldson is one of my all-time favorite books for 2nd-4th graders. It is a gripping, funny fantasy-adventure that is fabulous for developing reading comprehension strategies through the author’s imagined language of Groilish. Giant girl Jumbeelia kidnaps three human children and brings them up a beanstalk to her home in the giants’ land of Groil. This engaging story follows the three ‘iggly plops’, Colette, Steven, and Poppy, as they try to escape from the we

This simple, half-sheet, daily report works well for students that have difficulty with other class-wide behavior systems and can be tailored to the child's individual goals. I keep it on the student's desk and let them fill it out as the day progresses to build accountability for their behavior, then send home each day. Hope this helps you in your classroom!

I use this one frequently because of its flexibility; students can add both the cause and effect, or for differentiation, reading comprehension checks, or introducing the concept, you can write in the cause or the effect.
This simple writing process chart helps both you and your students keep track of where they are in the writing process. This is especially helpful if you have a writer's workshop (they all might be a different stages, etc) or something similar, though it can definitely be used if all students are working on the same writing assignment at a given time.
I like to laminate these or print on cardstock, then use clothespins with student names/ class numbers on them. It's a great management tool and
