I have been teaching music since 2004 and math since 2010. I currently teach music and math (among a couple other random subjects) at a private school for students with special needs in classes that are one-on-one or small groups.
This is a research project for private or class piano students or writing classes that wish to do a cross-curricular project involving the arts.
Students are to answer questions and write about two required topics (General Information and History, and How Does It Work?) and also on 3 of 6 optional topics (Pedals, Piano Types and Relatives, Famous Piano Players and Piano Usage in Popular Music, Famous Classical Piano Music and Composers, Pianos Today, or Taking Care of a Piano).
Each topic has
This is a worksheet to be used during a sound science unit in either music or science class. It shows examples of a sound wave and how its shape differs as the sound is manipulated. It then asks the student to draw examples of sound waves as well.

This is a project that can be split into two homework assignments or for student pairs to complete in class.
The students are to come up with a hypothetical store with hypothetical merchandise. They then calculate the markup over their purchase cost to get the regular sale price. They then create a special sale for their store and discount their items. Lastly, they compare their prices with a similar store "down the street".
This is a self-guided internet research project which aims to introduce students to a wide variety of musical genres. Encourage your students to listen to things they may not have heard of before.
This project was inspired by the website EveryNoise.com which contains a map of every type of musical genre its web crawler could find. Clicking on a genre plays a short example of that type of music. Clicking on the arrows next to the genre name displays a map of many example artists/songs to repres

This is a set of 3 worksheets to use after the introduction of notes and rests (whole, half, quarter) or as a review. None of these pages present the notes/rests on the staff.

Differentiation Strategy: Multiplying two 2-digit Numbers
The “2-for-1 Special”
I have had success with this method of teaching 2-digit multiplication with several of my students. We call it the “2-for-1 Special”, where you get 2 problems for the price of 1.
This method focuses on the Distribution Property side of 2-digit multiplication, splitting up the second factor into the tens and ones. You may wish to use number blocks to demonstrate this.
Included in this file are 2 worksheets (one w

This is a .PDF of a practice log for music lessons/class. There is room for 4 lessons on a sheet.
For my private piano students, I print a bunch out at a time and put them inside a prong folder so that their practice log book and additional lesson materials are collected in one location.
For each lesson, there is room to write
- the date
- what is to be practiced (pages from the book, additional repertoire, technique, etc.)
- a place to check off the number of practice sessions between less

This can be used as an anchor chart or handout when learning long division. As usual, this should not be presented before the concept is experienced and discovered through some sort of manipulative.
This page presents several mnemonics to remember the order of the steps (one shorthand, and 3 sentences). It also provides a color-coded guide of using the steps to solve a long-division problem.
This is a poster for the unattributed quote, "In this room, we don't do easy. We make easy happen through hard work and learning."
There are two versions included, one with a background and one without. Using the version without the background, you can print it out on colored paper or even scrapbook paper.

I am a fan of SQUILT (Super Quiet UnInterrupted Listening Time) with my younger students. This is one of several pages I have used with them to get what they hear out on paper.
This is just a simple worksheet for practice adding and subtracting on the number line from 0-10. There is also a 0-20 number line included for practice with larger problems.
I recommend placing the pages in a sheet-protector and using a dry erase marker.
This handout outlines steps used for solving word problems.
1. Read the question.
2. Understand the question.
3. Look for important information.
4. Highlight the important information.
5. Think of strategies to use.
6. Use words, numbers and pictures to solve. (Show all your work!)
7. Check, check, check your answers!
This handout is useful to be kept in their math binder, homework folder or to glue into a math journal.
Can be used with any grade level where these problem solving steps are in
Use the worksheet when learning about composers. It has places to write their birth/death years, where they were born, how/where they learned music, a list of 3 of their compositions, and a list of 3 interesting facts learned about the composer.
