Pythagorean Theorem Activity

This activity contains a variety (8) of Pythagorean Theorem questions. Some questions are straight forward and very easy such as providing the lengths of the legs and asking for the length of the hypotenuse while side lengths belong to a Pythagorean triple. While other questions are more difficult as they are application questions in which some questions have the diagram already drawn and some do not. Correct answers lead the student to 8 letters which they have to unscramble to form a math wo

Is It Linear? Mini-Bundle

Can your students determine if a function is linear or not? This mini-bundle teaches them how and contains everything you need for a one-day lesson plan! First, begin with the included PowerPoint that explains the concept of "Is It Linear?" The presentation takes the student through determining if graphs, equations in both slope-intercept and standard form and tables of values are linear or not. Flash cards of the two equations are included for the student so that they can participate with the

Function Machine PowerPoint

This is a PowerPoint presentation used to teach students about the Function Machine, Function Rules, Input/Output and Domain & Range. The presentation begins with a diagram of the function machine with input, output and rule labeled on the machine. The next two slides define domain, range and rule for the student. Then, the presentation explains using baby steps what a rule is and how one uses it. I begin with lingo that the student can understand and end with function notation. After that,

Intro to Exponents PowerPoint

This is a 20-slide presentation over the basic concepts of exponents, bases and coefficients. This is a great presentation to teach the concepts to beginners or to review (which is what I use it for with my Algebra 1 students) before moving on to a unit on Exponent Laws. The presentation begins with a schematic of a typical expression containing a coefficient, base and exponent. The schematic is labeled and each part is explained. Next, examples follow where the student is given an expression a

Identifying Variables PowerPoint

This is a powerpoint presentation explaining how to determine the two variables from any scenario (without looking at or having the question present). I developed this lesson because my students were not only struggling with Independent/Dependent variables, but they couldn't even figure out what the two variables were!! I have developed 3 criteria that I teach them to look for to determine the variables in a situation. (Then once we have the two variables, the next step is to determine which o

The specific type of word problems that are covered in this activity are the ones that describe two numbers such as "the sum of two numbers is 12. One number is 3 more than the other number". Students work in groups of 4 and the concept is introduced through a PowerPoint Presentation containing two clues that describe the two numbers. Once the students get the hang of

Slope from a Table Notes & Practice for 8th grade

Teach your students how to find the slope of a line from its table. I teach my students to find a pattern in the table to find the slope and then to write it as the change in y over the change in x. These notes follow this and do not use the formula (y2-y1 over x2-x1). This method is easier for those who struggle with math. 6 examples plus steps included. 10 more problems follow that can be assigned for independent practice. Key included. © 2024 Secondary Math Solutions This purchase is for

Teaching style

My goal is to make math easy to learn by making it engaging and fun with foldables, activities and games. In addition, I tend to make notes and practice sheets that are very focused on the specific skill or skills (sometimes pre-requisite) that need to be developed so that the student can be successful. My resources reflect this. In addition, the students that I teach are on-level or below and usually struggle with math and/or don't like it. My approach is to start with where they are and what they know and bring them up from there. My resources reflect this and do not contain too many tricky numbers or super high-level questions because I want to keep them engaged and feeling successful. Finally, I try to vary the approach and not do the same thing from day to day (notes, game, activity, foldable, etc.). Therefore, my store contains a variety of resources for each unit.
