**Ready to go! No prep required! Turkey Math for Upper Levels** Are your students antsy before Thanksgiving break? Then this is the perfect activity to fill up to 2 days and still have them talking about math!! In the article A definitive ranking of Thanksgiving sides, Alex Abad-Santos, discusses various attributes of common Thanksgiving sides. He presents a variety of graphs (bar graph, circle graph, line graphs, and scatterplot) to demonstrate the comparisons. In this activity, students ar

In this technology based activity, students will use Desmos.com to gain understanding of writing equations of lines in Point Slope Form and finding Domain and Range. Students are given a link to a Desmos shooting star design which has been made with tables. They are asked to find the equation of each line used to make the design. Students are open to write equations in slope intercept form or point slope form, however, point slope form is easier for this activity. Students are also asked to

Often students are asked to participate in fundraising to support their school and/or organizations, but how do those organizations set goals for selling? In this activity, students will use their knowledge of graphing systems of inequalities (or linear programming) to propose fundraising goals. The scenario the students work through is a real life scenario that occurred in my school. In the introduction, students brainstorm possible solutions to this problem, then the activity walks them thr

In this activity, students will analyze calories and fat fast food sandwiches. They will collect data, create a scatterplot, and generate a line of best fit. Then they will use this information to create equations in Slope Intercept Form and Point Slope Form. The equations will be used for making predictions and inferences. Students are encouraged to work in groups to collect the data to help “divide and conquer” the work. This activity can be used as an introduction to PSF and SIF or as a su

Students love to talk about their birthdays! This activity has students collect classmate birthday data and uses that data to apply to basic probability. This product includes teacher notes, a data recording sheet for students, and 9 questions to relate the data to probability. Questions include: What is the probability of having a birthday on an ODD numbered day? What is the probability of having a birthday during a month containing the letter “Y”? The activity could be used as practice or a

In this activity students apply their knowledge of systems of inequalities (or linear programming) to a very real life problem – their semester grade! This activity is intended for high school students to determine what grades they need for their 2nd quarter and exam to earn a particular grade for the semester. The student is walked through the process of creating inequalities that apply to this situation. It is based on the student’s first quarter grade and the assumption that quarter grades

This is not your ordinary matching practice worksheet for factor and FOIL! Yes, included in this product is a 10 question practice matching factor/FOIL worksheet. However, it also comes with cards for a variety of activities to assess understanding! After completing the worksheet, students pick a card. (Cards are on pages 5-7 and need to be PRECUT by the teacher.) Once everyone (or the majority – use teacher discretion) in the class is finished and has a card, the teacher should have stude

In this activity, students are given various clues such as the standard form of the equation of a line, point slope form, slope, x intercept, y intercept, and 2 random points. They are to use the given information to find the remaining missing information. This activity is a great way for students to demonstrate understanding and connections between these different components of a linear function. The activity can be used as an enrichment for a lower grade level Algebra class, practice for an

This Anytime Activity is designed to complement the classic musical composition “Dot and a Line: A Romance of Lower Mathematics” that was created in 1965. Questions keep students accountable to paying attention the the narration. At the end there are questions such as “Relate the romantic story of the dot and line to another romance you have seen in a story, poem, book, or movie. Explain why you chose this particular romance” to help students tie this piece together with some of the literary

Have students pick out a clip art that represents them. It is preferable to choose clip art that has some straight lines and definite angles to measure. To help my students do this correctly, I give each student a labeled triangle printed on transparency film. Then when students are working on one of these types of problems, they line up their transparency with the problem on their paper. They line up
