WHAT'S INCLUDED?

Geometry Vocabulary for Interactive Math Notebooks

6 pages of geometry terms for students to glue in their interactive math notebooks for reference. Students can glue these pages in their notebooks to reference throughout the course of your geometry unit.

10 GEOMETRY WORKSHEETS

In the ten worksheets provided, students:

  • identify irregular quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons.
  • use the clues given to figure out what shape is being described
  • decide if each statement about a geometric shape or geometry term is true or false.
  • use a diagram to sort shapes based on their similar and different properties
  • identify basic polygons

✅ 4 ERROR ANALYSIS PAGES

Students look at four different work samples and decide which pages are right and which are wrong based on what is shown. These are perfect for math talk or whole group discussions. The error analysis pages help with evaluating common third grade math mistakes.

✅EMOJI MATH SORT

This is a sorting activity where students put a smile or a frown emoji on top of each task card. If the answer is correct, a happy smile is put on top of it. If the wrong answer was found, the students put a frown on top of the task card.

✅POLYGON SPINNER ACTIVITY

Students use a paperclip in this no-prep math activity and spin different polygons. Then, students keep a tally of which shape wins the contest!

✅CREATE YOUR OWN GYM GEOMETRY ACTIVITY

Students design a gymnasium based on the geometry requirements given. This is perfect for high achievers and fast finishers during math block.

✅GAME #1: FAST DRAW / FAST DEFINE

This game helps students practice their geometry terms while playing a game at the same time. Students have to draw the shape in order for their partners to guess and earn points.

✅GAME #2: RACE TO SORT

This is a great game for whole group time where students have to race to sort their polygons into the correct categories. The first group to do this correctly wins!

✅GAME #3: WHO TOOK MR. FLUFFERS?

This is my favorite activity in the geometry unit! Students are given a list of geometry suspects of who stole the cat, Mr. Fluffers. Using the clues given, students figure out the suspect (using their geometry knowledge).

✅ GAME #4: BUILD A PIZZA GAME

Each player gets a background to build their pizza on. Playing cards and pizza topping pieces go in the middle. Each time you get an answer correct, you earn a piece for your pizza. Chance cards are provided to spice up gameplay. You never know who’s going to win with these included! The first person to finish getting 10 items on their pizza wins!

✅ GAME #5: WHOLE CLASS GAME

I call this game "Bucket Filler!". Set up the task cards all around the room for students. Print enough of each task card for every student. Give each student a recording sheet. Let students wander the room and solve each task card. When they solve a card, they bring it to the teacher to be checked. If it's correct, they get to drop the task card in a bucket. At the end of gameplay, the teacher draws names out of the bucket. Those students earn a small prize as a reward (an eraser, a pencil, etc).

✅ GAME #6: RACING GAME

This game is called "Line Them Up!". In the game, students race to see which team can line their cards up in the correct order first. Here are the steps to play. Mix up each set of cards well. Give a set of cards to each team. Start the race. Students find the START card first. They put this down. Once the start card is found, students find the answer to the equation. They continue to “Line Them Up” until they reach the FINISH card. The first team done wins!

This aligns with 3rd Grade Common Core Standard 3.G.1:

  • Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.

This aligns with 3rd Grade Texas TEKS:

  • TEKS 3.3E: solve problems involving partitioning an object or a set of objects among two or more recipients using pictorial representations of fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8
  • TEKS 3.6B: use attributes to recognize rhombuses, parallelograms, trapezoids, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories

This aligns with Florida BEST Standards (B.E.S.T.)

  • MA.3.GR.1.1 Describe and draw points, lines, line segments, rays, intersecting lines, perpendicular lines and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
  • MA.3.GR.1.2 Identify and draw quadrilaterals based on their defining attributes. Quadrilaterals include parallelograms, rhombi, rectangles, squares and trapezoids.
