This activity is great for creative writing! I remember doing a mock newspaper as a kid; I thought it was so fun to pretend like I was in that time period or in the book. Writing from the character's POV is a great way to have a mini lesson on tone and mood. This is a good opportunity to also have your students learn about "Show don't tell." They can write from the character's perspective and say a lot about the character's feelings and thoughts by what they write. This is also a nice opportunit

Growth Mindset is a positive way of thinking. When a student laments, "I just can't do that" or "I am bad at Math!," it is healthy to say to them, "Well, you just can't do that...yet, but with hard work and practice I know you can learn to work out those Math equations." These 3 activities focus on writing code using paper and pencil. Coding is a great critical thinking activity because the students have to position themselves on the map and move by holding their place in their mind. These activities can be extended to procedural writing activities. Write code and then explain your steps. "First, I left the zoo and turned East. Then, I went straight through 2 intersections..." etc. I hope you enjoy! Want more coding activities? Writing Code Using Map Skills

About the store

Experience

I am starting my 15th year as an educator, however I have worked with children for 3 years in Montessori before this, as well. Currently, I teach 1st and 2nd grade ELA and SS. I have taught Health/Tech to K-5, 1st and 3rd grade self contained and also 4th grade self contained. I have also taught 7th and 8th grade Reading/Literature.

Teaching style

Our classroom, the students and mine, is a learner centered area where we focus on becoming sound problem solvers thorough the use of higher level questions, activities, and also by having growth mindsets. We may not know the answer or "stink at reading", but we just do not know the answer YET and stinking at reading is a temporary, easy fix with a positive growth mindset.

Awards & shining teacher moments

My published short stories and poetry can be found in: Perspectives Literary Magazine (2000) Inkling Literary Magazine (2005) Volt Literary Magazine (2011)

My own education history

I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing from the University of Houston in 2010. I have a minor in History.

Additional biographical information

Being a teacher has its definite perks, such as giving us this invitation to join our students on their journey through understanding. I could not imagine holding another position, as my career, that would carry as much meaning. I am a mom to a kind and creative 11 year old person. :) I love working with and educating kiddos and learning from them too!
