This is a compilation of review questions for the main units taught in 8th grade Science. Includes questions from the Hydrosphere Unit, Earth and Evolution Unit, Cells and Microbiology Unit, and Chemistry Unit. I used it as a guide to help my students review their knowledge of what we learned during the school year. It also makes helpful suggestions for how to study. My students found it very helpful. This activity is similar to a lab and is designed to be done in groups. You will need any type of cereal with more than one color in it, a hard candy such as M & M's or Smarties, vinegar, and baking soda for the activity. This is a basic review Power Point on photosynthesis and cellular respiration. Has several illustrations and a comparison of Aerobic vs. Anaerobic respiration.

A great simple lab about how temperature, size, and volume can effect the rate of a reaction. This lab is done using Alka-Seltzer tabs (or other effervescent tabs). It includes the data tables and Analysis and Conclusion questions. It was originally designed to be done in groups but it can be done by individual students.

Fantastic Lab that students love and is one of my favorites! Since I always do these two together you get two labs together. The first is a lab to demonstrate Osmosis. You use eggs that have been soaked in vinegar to dissolve the shell, then soak them in other liquids. The results really bring home how water moves in and out of a membrane. This a great activity for helping struggling readers. I have used this activity with kids ranging from 1st grade up to 8th. There is a 2 page quiz that assesses scientific method vocabulary and an understanding of scientific inquiry. It includes matching, a critical thinking questions about observation and inferences, and a lab example where students have to decide on independent and dependent variables, as well as assess the validity of the lab. this is a short document I have use in Earth and Environmental Science. It would also be appropriate for middle grades students. There is a brief description of how the Rock Cycle works along with a visual. Then there is a matching activity involving pictures of rocks and the students identify them as sedimentary, metamorphic, or igneous. The 3rd page consists of 2 more rock cycle diagrams and the key to the matching activity.

This is a handout/worksheet/critical thinking sheet, which practices scientific inquiry. It involves a notes portion on observations (both qualitative and quantitative) and inferences. It then moves into practice where students formulate their own examples. As well as providing visuals the students use to brainstorm observations and inferences for. My students always had a much better understanding of observation vs. inference after this. I have also included a key of possible answers.

This is a Power point presentation on the formation of sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks that I have used in my Earth Science class. It gives basic information as well as visuals. Very straightforward and simple for the students to follow.
