This a great activity for helping struggling readers. I have used this activity with kids ranging from 1st grade up to 8th. There is a 2 page quiz that assesses scientific method vocabulary and an understanding of scientific inquiry. It includes matching, a critical thinking questions about observation and inferences, and a lab example where students have to decide on independent and dependent variables, as well as assess the validity of the lab. This is a handout/worksheet/critical thinking sheet, which practices scientific inquiry. It involves a notes portion on observations (both qualitative and quantitative) and inferences. It then moves into practice where students formulate their own examples. As well as providing visuals the students use to brainstorm observations and inferences for. My students always had a much better understanding of observation vs. inference after this. I have also included a key of possible answers.

We have found great success using this worksheet to teach the Laws of Logarithms. There is a review of the laws, common mistakes to avoid, 22 practice problems, and an answer key included. This activity gives students a chance to take pieces of evidence and form a hypothesis. In the teacher instructions you start out with a sentence that you will cut up into its word pieces. Groups of students are given the pieces, but are only allowed to look at a few at a time. The students then work as a group to try to come up with the original sentence, as more words are slowly revealed to them.
