-Visual support for multimodal communicators - great for partially speaking students who use a combination of speech, AAC device, and typing/spelling words. -Perfect for clarifying communication. If a student uses one modality and is not understood, present the visual and cue them to choose a different way to say it. -If needed, practice first with flashcards of common items/subjects and point to a different modality for each picture. Cue the student to label each picture using speech/device/t

Flyer/Handout for Families: MEDICAL ID

This flyer can be sent home in backpacks or emailed as an attachment to families of students with special needs. Having a medical ID bracelet (or necklace/shoe tag etc.) is an important emergency safety precaution for both speaking and non-speaking students of all ages. Providing safety information like name and phone number is obviously very important which is why it's on nearly every checklist of the communication basics. However, it seems such a waste of time and "memory space" drilling int

When teaching vocabulary and concepts, we prioritize the most functional and frequently used, which means we might not cover certain topics like grief, death, and loss if they don't apply to our students (especially if we have bigger fish to fry at the moment, like "bathroom," "stop," and "play.") However, when we find out that a student's family member has suddenly died, we need to ensure our students have the words they need to express themselves. Additionally, our students often don't engage

This training was originally designed for teachers and classroom staff and was adapted for parents, families, and caregivers, so it is somewhat in depth for families that can handle it but slides can be deleted or skipped to be more brief for families that need it. The training does not focus on one system in particular, but does emphasize the importance of core vocabulary, and uses LAMP and TouchChat as examples. Includes short videos, and examples hyperlinked to YouTube. Topics covered: - Cor

Social Communication Checklist/Visual - Appropriately Terminating Conversation

This checklist is for students who abruptly turn and leave social interactions. It targets remaining oriented and attentive until the communicative partner is finished speaking, then giving a wrap-up phrase before saying goodbye. This is ideal for quick visits around the school to different staff and peers, have a few turns of conversation, then move on appropriately. It gets in a lot of practice terminating appropriately and also keeps social interactions short and sweet so students at this l

When a parent or family member/caregiver of a student gets sick or hospitalized it can be very disruptive to that student. It is particularly difficult for special needs students who rely more heavily on caregivers and routines, and are less able to communicate their emotions, understand what is happening, or ask questions. This social story broadly covers family members getting sick or going to the hospital, how that might cause change, what is expected of the student, how that might feel, an

School-based-SLP working with school-age and transition-age students - most of whom use AAC.

Additional biographical information

I'm passionate about working with individuals with special needs, particularly ASD and AAC users. There is no such thing as too old for AAC, or language/cognitive pre-requisites for high-tech AAC. Working in the special education field, so often we need materials and activities that are so specific we have to make them ourselves. We spend so much time and effort on them. What if even one other person found it helpful? That would be amazing! If we all shared for free, the world would be a better place for us as professionals and more importantly, for our students!
