This structured activity really helped my students who was having trouble using even pre-written conversation questions or sentence starters spontaneously. I used this activity as a starting point. It also was helpful to send home so family could practice as well. There are two versions of each page - one with visuals and one without so new topics (e.g. places, favorites, etc.) can be used. - - * * * Remember, sharing is caring! This is a bundle of 10 very fast and simple no-bake -microwave only- no-freeze, recipes that I used with my student who uses LAMP (who also happens to be a complete chocoholic). I will not by any means say that these are healthy recipes but we kept portions small, and my student was always VERY motivated! (spontaneous "go kitchen" at the beginning when I would go get her from class eventually turned into spontaneous "go kitchen now"!). The recipes focus on core vocabulary such as PUT, NEED, O

This is a bundle of lessons used with a group of middle/high school cooking social skills group. Students were early communicators. Some used speech and some used AAC. The social skill focus for each lesson is briefly mentioned in the beginning (1-2 slides) and are often repeated for review (e.g. personal space and turning to face partners is repeated as in our group it was an area of need.) Then the ingredients are assigned to each student, the r

I made a social story for one of my students who uses AAC and can navigate/produce language very well but is highly prompt dependent (e.g. will sit in front of a password locked iPad for 10 minutes, waiting for someone to prompt, "do you need something?" before saying "I need help.", etc.). The story covers the basic ways he can initiate, as well as encouragement. Although my student uses AAC, it only mentions use of a device on the cover page. If that word is deleted, it could be used with stud

Social Narrative: Expected and Unexpected - Student and Teacher Roles

This is a social story I created to help one of my students understand different expectations of social language and behavior for teachers and students. I've found it's difficult for many students with special needs to use socially appropriate language and behavior because they are following teacher models all day with no direct instruction on how their role as a student is different than that of a teacher. This is why we see students prompting each other and staff with fill-ins or questions the

Additional biographical information

I'm passionate about working with individuals with special needs, particularly ASD and AAC users. There is no such thing as too old for AAC, or language/cognitive pre-requisites for high-tech AAC. Working in the special education field, so often we need materials and activities that are so specific we have to make them ourselves. We spend so much time and effort on them. What if even one other person found it helpful? That would be amazing! If we all shared for free, the world would be a better place for us as professionals and more importantly, for our students!
