NOTE: Each page is made to be 2 half sheets (either folded or cut in half) I made this for my students because they are working on increasing their vocabulary. Each of the 10 vocabulary words has 2 pages to correctly select the word from a field of 4 to fill in a sentence and one page to use the word in a sentence with a photo for inspiration.

Social Narrative: Expected and Unexpected - Student and Teacher Roles

This is a social story I created to help one of my students understand different expectations of social language and behavior for teachers and students. I've found it's difficult for many students with special needs to use socially appropriate language and behavior because they are following teacher models all day with no direct instruction on how their role as a student is different than that of a teacher. This is why we see students prompting each other and staff with fill-ins or questions the

I created this book originally for my cousin who has a rare, severe skin condition that leaves her unable to do many of the things she used to do with her three year-old daughter. I wanted to help her daughter in some way so after researching and talking to some friends in the child psych field, I created this book to help my little cousin: - Understand her parent's illness in an age appropriate way - Explain why her parent might seem upset sometimes - Assure her that although some things have

This is a color sorting activity I made from my ABA days. I used pictures of preferred items for the clients I had in mind (and many others) such as robots, dinosaurs, legos, transformers, Disney's Cars, crayons, food, characters from Rio and Monsters vs. Aliens. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink, Brown, Black, Grey, & White What a difference it can make when you use motivating materials!!!

Four vocabulary acquisition strategies with visuals. I used this with an 8th grade student with receptive/expressive language disorder. His vocabulary was significantly below grade level and he had difficulty acquiring new vocabulary taught in sessions and class. When we got to words he did not know, we would look up definitions and he would choose which strategy he wanted to use to help him remember the definition. 1. Actions paired with words - Gesture or pantomime associated with the meani

WHY Socialize with Peers - Social Narrative: Reasons to Have Conversation ASD

This narrative is all about the "WHY" of social interaction as opposed to the "how" or "what" (which are social skills.) This was created specifically for a student who had the social skills conceptually, and when motivated by an external reward or prompted, could interact with peers, but simply was not intrinsically motivated, and therefore social skills would not generalize. There are many kids on the ASD spectrum like this. For these kids, I believe there is no benefit in drilling or forcing

"Z Kitten Flies to France" was originally written for a specific client with autism who was preparing to go to France with her family, but it could be used for other children for other purposes. For students with special needs / anxiety who are preparing to go on planes and travel this story could be used as platform to discuss: -Looking at pictures of and reading about where you will be traveling, (what will be the same, what will be different) -The importance of staying close to adults when t

Additional biographical information

I'm passionate about working with individuals with special needs, particularly ASD and AAC users. There is no such thing as too old for AAC, or language/cognitive pre-requisites for high-tech AAC. Working in the special education field, so often we need materials and activities that are so specific we have to make them ourselves. We spend so much time and effort on them. What if even one other person found it helpful? That would be amazing! If we all shared for free, the world would be a better place for us as professionals and more importantly, for our students!
