Angle of Elevation and Angle of Rotation In these two playdough mats, students use playdough to practice their Angle of Rotation and Angle of Elevation skills. Because the use of playdough is “big and bold”, the teacher can easily and formatively assess student understanding. The Angle of Rotation mat has students start with color coding the initial side and terminal side of an angle. It then moves students through creating both positive and negative angles of rotation, as well as angles a

Students struggle with proofs for many reasons. Often, when given information, they do not know where start. Students need to think that if they are proving triangles are congruent, “how can I use SSS, SAS, ASA, or AAS”. If they are showing lines are parallel on a graph, “how can I use slope”, etc. This resource can be used a variety of ways to help students determine where to go with the given information. Pages 3 & 4 can be given to students as a handout. Pages 5-8 are designed to be used

Students get thrown into a real life problem with this project! The scenario the students work through is a concrete company that has suddenly lost a vital employee. The company is in need of providing a quote to a customer ASAP for a basement, driveway, and garage floor. Students are provided with dimensions and price points for different thicknesses of concrete. Based on this information, they are to come up with a proposed price for the customer. The work doesn’t stop there! The company

You can ask Siri on an iPhone “What planes are flying over me?” and she will tell you exactly that. But exactly how far out of a radius does Siri report planes? This activity will help you and your students use trigonometry and angles of elevation and depression find out! Applications include the use of tangent AND cosine! There are several versions of this activity all in one download! The first version is a printable activity where the data is provided and a map is provided. The second a

In this envelope activity, students practice matching parallel and perpendicular slopes. Download the preview to view the various forms of questions. Envelope activities are a great way for students to get practice without having the feel of a drill and practice worksheet. Students can work in groups or individually. The teacher can have students pass the envelopes after a given amount of time while students stay in their seats, students can rotate between stations set up each with an envelo

Great fall activity! In this STEAM activity, Band students and Geometry students will collaborate to learn how transformation geometry applies to marching band. Marching bands use transformations to map out their show on the field. The coordinates that are used are similar to those that are studied in Geometry, and the football field is similar to the coordinate plane. In this interdisciplinary activity, marching band students are paired up with Geometry students in order to learn from each o

This is one of my students' favorite activities! Vocabulary words' letters are scrambled. Students are to unscramble the words using the provided clue. This is a great way to practice vocabulary acquisition, application, and spelling. This activity covers the following vocabulary: supplementary angles, parallel lines, vertical angles, corresponding angles, alternate interior angles, alternate exterior angles, linear pair, and consecutive interior angles. 15 questions are provided that ask for

For this inquiry activity, students create their own design on a coordinate plane and use this design to explore properties of dilation. They will be asked to shrink and expand their design by a given scale factor, compare the coordinates of each design, and finally be given an opportunity to prove the properties of similarity and dilation on a coordinate plane. Students will use the distance formula to demonstrate corresponding sides are proportional and a protractor to demonstrate correspondi

This Anytime Activity is designed to complement the classic musical composition “Dot and a Line: A Romance of Lower Mathematics” that was created in 1965. Questions keep students accountable to paying attention the the narration. At the end there are questions such as “Relate the romantic story of the dot and line to another romance you have seen in a story, poem, book, or movie. Explain why you chose this particular romance” to help students tie this piece together with some of the literary

In this investigation, students will use raw spaghetti and mini marshmallows to discover how the surface area and volume of a prism relate to the surface area and volume of the respective oblique prism. Students will be asked to create a rectangular prism using marshmallows to connect the vertices. Using a ruler, they will measure the dimensions of the prism, calculate and record the surface area and volume. Then they will make their prism into an OBLIQUE prism by giving it a slight push to t

In this inquiry activity, students will use clip art to discover the properties of similar figures (corresponding sides proportional and corresponding angles equal). Have students pick out a clip art that represents them. It is preferable to choose clip art that has some straight lines and definite angles to measure. (For example, a baseball would not be easy to gather the necessary data, but a baseball bat or baseball player would be suitable.) Students should then make the clip art 2 dist

Give students a transparent tool to help them label triangles! Students often have trouble labeling parts (such as x, 2x, a, b, c, opposite, adjacent, hypotenuse, etc) of triangles for Special Triangles, Pythagorean Theorem, and Trigonometry. To help my students do this correctly, I give each student a labeled triangle printed on transparency film. Then when students are working on one of these types of problems, they line up their transparency with the problem on their paper. They line up

Students generate data on how they use their time in a week (168 hours) to create a circle graph. This activity is designed with several objectives in mind. 1) It can help students realize how and where they spend their time. This can be the springboard for time management conversations. 2) In this activity students are asked to calculate the percent of time they spend doing activities and to translate that into degrees of central angles. 3) This activity reinforces the use of a protractor,
