Helping students understand various problem solving strategies is key when building their number sense as mathematicians. One of those problem solving strategies is using pictures to solve problems. Students will paste the math journal strip at the top of their page in their math journal. You can read it together as a class, small group, and/or individually based on your students' needs. Students will then use drawings of objects, pictures, etc. to solve the addition story problem. Then, studen

Sequencing numbers is an essential skill that a kindergartener needs to master. These math journals are a scaffold of sequencing activities counting by ones, twos, fives, and tens, along with number cards 1 - 100 for small group use. Students will cut apart numbers from each math journal and paste them in sequential order, based upon the counting pattern desired. Teachers can give smiley faces, stickers, etc. to students who finish before others. Those students who do finish earlier can practice

These math journals are great activities for students to represent numbers in different ways. Students will practice writing the numeral for each number, as well as draw a picture matching the story and matching the same numeral. Teachers can give smiley faces, stickers, etc. to those who successfully finish. Those students who finish before others can continue to practice writing that numeral and/or add more to their picture. These math journals contain numbers 0 - 20. These math journals are

The first part to these math journals allow students to practice tracing and drawing their 2D shapes. The second part of these journals is a 2D shape hunt! The 2D shape hunt will require adult supervision for the first time through. After students understand procedures and/or what is expected, this is something that they could do independently during stations, centers, etc. Students will record and draw objects that match the 2D shape mentioned in the math journal. This was one of my students' f

These math journals will help students understanding of what each numeral represents. Students will cut and paste each math journal in their math journal notebooks. Math journal notebooks can be composition notebooks, spiral notebooks, etc. Students will think of three different ways to represent the numeral in their math journal. The ultimate goal is for students to realize that each numeral represents a quantity of objects. For example, if the numeral is four students could draw four sticks, f

These math journals focus on missing numbers and what comes before and after a given number. If students can see the flexibility between numbers, that will strengthen their number sense that much more! Students will cut and paste each strip in their math journal. Math journals can be composition notebooks, spiral notebooks, etc. Students will fill in the missing numbers or write a sequence of numbers, depending on the math journal chosen for the activity. Teachers can give smiley faces, stickers

Drawing animals is always a joy, but this activity gives drawing animals a mathematical twist! Students will choose two animals of their choice to draw. The challenge comes when students are only allowed to use 2D shapes to draw their animals. There are 2D shape cards with this activity for students who need a visual as to what each 2D shape looks like. This activity is ENGAGING to students because they get to be creative, yet it gives them another opportunity to draw their 2D shapes in a fun,
