Description

Project Based Learning Activity: Create A Classroom Community

This project integrates elements of problem solving, collaboration, classroom design, and planning as students create their own classroom community.

There are 13 activities (most are 1 page for each) for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research.

***THIS RESOURCE IS NOW DIGITAL for DISTANCE LEARNING***

See below for more details on using it with Google Slides.

This PBL is a little different.

I created this PBL because I wanted students to understand that classrooms should function as positive community environments, where everyone has a different perspective--but we can all function together and cohesively.

It focuses on students collaborating with one another so they can see differences, perspectives, and also understand what it means for classrooms to work as a community.

What's Included:

Introduction

Students are introduced to the topic of creating their dream classroom community.

Brainstorm

Students brainstorm different ideas of what a classroom is, what it means, how it should operate, and anything else they can think of. This portion can be completed independently or as a whole class.

Community & Classroom

Students discuss what a community is and what a classroom is. They will find the similarities and see how a classroom is just like a community.

All About Me

Students fill out a form that answers questions all about themselves, such as favorite book, sports, and subjects. This is a get to know you page.

Classmate Interview

Students interview a classmate to find out more about them.

Important To Me

Students rate a variety of different school items on their importance to them. Use this as a discussion to talk about how everyone has different needs and interests.

Class Mantras

Students create 4 positive mantras that could be used in the classroom this year.

Job Titles

Students create important jobs that should be handled during the year, along with reasoning why they should be included in class.

Safety procedure

Students discuss (with the teacher) some of the safety procedures that will take place during the year (tornado drill, lock downs, etc.).

Blueprints

Students will take inventory of the room, supplies, and furniture. Then they’ll create a blueprint/map of the current layout. Students will then redesign their classroom.

In This Classroom

Students define who they are and what they do using the phrase “In this classroom we”.

Class Community Project

Students discuss ways or ideas for creating a community service in school (or in their community).

-There are 2 versions of this, pick which you would like best.

Acrostics

Students create acrostics for the words FRIENDS, TRUST, GOALS, and RESPECT.

A Letter To Myself

Students write a letter to themselves that will focus on goals they would like to accomplish during this school year. Letter can be opened in the last week/last day of school.

This can be completed independently, but it is definitely created to be used for the entire class with heavy teacher involvement.

Ideally, after each section/activity, teachers stop and allow students to share and discuss their reasoning and build rapport with classmates and the teacher.

I *highly* suggest recording/keeping track of information the class shares because it can become the foundation for how the classroom works for management and learning styles.

If you’re new to PBL, this is an easier type to implement because you’ll be walking the students through each section.

This can easily be used to identify how students learn, what they’re interested in, and how they function together.
