Description

Project Based Learning Activity: Design A Mini-Golf Course

This project integrates elements of science, math, ELA, social studies, ELA, and creativity into a student-driven final product. It will combine students’ imagination, creativity, and problem solving skills as they design a mini-golf course.

***THIS RESOURCE IS NOW DIGITAL for DISTANCE LEARNING***

See below for more details on using it with Google Slides.

There are 16 activities for students to complete. Each page involves a problem or idea they must solve, recreate, or answer. Pages can vary from writing, math, map skills, real-world application, research, and problem solving/decision making skills.

7, 8 Title Page/introduction

Students learn that they will be designing a miniature golf course for their town.

9 Golf Brainstorm

Students brainstorm and collaborate to find out what they know about mini golf courses. This can be completed independently or in a group.

10 Creating The Course

Students read some “things to think about” as they prepare to design their course such as tips and tricks.

11, 12 Golf Vocabulary

Students identify 18 vocabulary words related to golf. They may write the definition or draw an illustration.

14 As The Designer

Students make design choices for the course. This could include a theme or their own personal interests.

15, 16 Course Recognition

Students create a slogan, logo, and name for their course.

17-19 Advertising

Students create an advertisement (billboard) to showcase their golf course and draw players in.

20-21 Supply Budget

Students pick supplies that they will need--but have to use a budget. They will separate out the items and graph the information on two pages.

22 Snack Shop & Food Problems

Students pick items and prices for foods that will be in the snack shop (12 total foods and drinks). Then students create word problems based on the information they created.

23 Rates, Hours, & Cost of Playing

Students come up with playing rates and hours of operations. Once the COST page is complete students will create math word problems for their classmates to solve.

24 Designing the Hole

Students read the overview and rules for creating and laying out their entire golf course that they have created.

25 Hole Design

Included are 5 different variations of pages for students to create three holes for the course.

26 Put it all together

Overview page that shows students how to create miniature versions of holes, and then place them together, to build a full version of the golf course.

-Also include 3 sheets of miniature grids to create the holes and course.

27-29 Course Layout

Grids to use for the final version of the golf course.

*********

As students work through each page of the project, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on user imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.

All pages can be geared towards multiple grade levels, although for some younger students the teacher may need to give more explicit instructions.
