Description

There are almost one million different species of insects and bugs in the world. With that many insects creeping and crawling around the world, there is lot to be learned from these amazing creatures. They are sometimes misunderstood, menacing, and kind of cool...all at the same time.

***THIS RESOURCE IS NOW DIGITAL for DISTANCE LEARNING***

See below for more details on using it with Google Slides.

Luckily, the government has designed a way for students to get an up-close look at all these insects. A super-secret program can shrink humans down to the size of an bug, which means students will be traveling around the globe getting super-close to all the bugs they could dream of.

Infestation Insects is a project based learning activity (PBL) that lets kids take a closer look at the importance of insects and how they impact the world around them.

There are 19 activities (most are 1 page each) for students to complete. Each page involves an issue or topic they must solve, design, create, or research. As students work through each page, they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes based on information they learn. By the end, all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the creator’s imagination, creativity, and mindset.

What's Included

PAGE Title Content

7 Title Page

8 Introduction

Informational page where students find out more about the PBL and how they’ll be learning about insects that are all around them.

10 Insect Survey

Students take a survey to answer questions and find out how they feel about insects and bugs.

11 Brainstorm

Students write what they already know about insects. This could be completed individually or as a class.

12 What About Bugs

Students answer questions about bugs. They might not know the answers, but this is to pique interests and get them thinking.

14 Vocabulary

Students define insect related vocabulary terms. There are three pages and 27 terms. Students may write or draw the definitions.

17 Insect Vs. Animals

Students use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the insects and animals.

18 Research Specific Insects

Students can research 9 different types of insects (these are provided). There are extra sheets for students who choose to pick different insects of their own. Print out as many blank sheets as you need.

28 Around the World

Students must find six unique insects around the world and add them to a map. **Bonus Opportunity: Teachers can take this and generate a gigantic map of insects all over the world.

30 Issue With Insects

Students work to understand issues facing insects and some of the problems they can cause.

32 Journal Entries

Students will take notes of their explorations around school, on the playground, and anywhere else they search for bugs.

39 Location, Location

Students look at four locations in their area/community and four locations around the world, then identify (or find) bugs that live in those areas. There is a page of questions that follows.

42 Buggy Parts

Students label six body parts of a bee and a mosquito.

43 Friend Vs. Foe

Students keep a running list of insects that are harmless and ones that people should stay clear of.

44 Close Encounters

46 Bug You

Students write text messages to a friend sharing some of their favorite facts that they have been learning about.

47 Ant Communities

Students create an ant community that includes 9 specific parts of an ant colony. They will draw and label in the space provided.

48 Instasects

Students create three up-close and detailed illustrations of insects. They will need to draw these based on pictures they have (from books/magazines/internet). Don’t draw it from memory--be detailed and use a resource.

49 Final Report

Students can write a final report of their adventure with the bugs or a closing summary of what they took away from studying insects.

I used this to supplement my horticulture and agronomy classes for insect identification portions. Some of the activities are lower level as this isn't technically meant for high school students but I was able to elevate a lot of the activities to make them more challenging for high school kiddos and the activities were perfect as they were for some of my special needs students that struggle a little bit more with grade level materials. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE and recommend!
