Do you find teaching long division to be difficult and frustrating for you and your students? Do you find that there are just too many hands up with questions like "I forget how to do it," and "What do I do now?" or "I can't do this." I have found that most math books don't spend enough time breaking the steps for long division down into manageable pieces. So I've created a long division mini unit with different activities that spreads out the skills and process over a period of 5 days. Thi

Simply laminate the task cards, and students can make several attempts at dividing the number. This is a simple, fun card game that will help reinforce the concept behind the place value chart for your fourth graders. I developed this game because my fourth graders were having a hard time explaining WHY we regroup, even though it's something we practice daily on a place value chart. This game isolates the skill of multiplying by 10 or 100 and finding the resulting place value. This game has 3 levels (places to the millions, ten thousands, or hundreds) to help you differentiate for studen

About the store

Experience

I have taught fourth grade for 9 years in public school and third grade in a charter school for 3 years. Prior to my full time teaching career I was a paraprofessional for a teacher of the deaf for grades 1 and 2 for a year, and a preschool teacher for 2 years.

Teaching style

I am pragmatic so I can meet the needs of my students. I teach my fourth graders about working in groups so they can learn social skills as well as academics. I enjoy the balanced literacy reading and writing program. Some experts who have influenced me are John Collins and Lucy Caulkins. In math I use a combination of note taking and math games to promote understanding of vocabulary and principles as well as practice for applying skills. My district has also recently adopted the Math In Focus (Singapore Math) program. In science and social studies I teach research skills to enhance students' writing as well as reading to learn new information since.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I was awarded grant money that funded the purchase of science materials for 6 classrooms at my school in October of 2012.

My own education history

Bradford College: BA in Psychology, minor in Education; Lesley University: MA in Education

Additional biographical information

I have served on district-wide literacy and science curriculum committees for several years. I have served on school-wide literacy team for several years. I also served as the Second Step (emotional curriculum) school-wide lead teacher.
