Perpendicular and Parallel Slope Exploration gives students a chance to discover the relationship of slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines. They will use Desmos slider bar tools to do so. (Click here to see an example of how slider bars work.) Students will record their discovered parallel and perpendicular equations in tables. The tables are followed by leading questions about slope relationships and check for understanding problems. To conclude the activity, teachers can provide students

Help students understand the true meaning of solving an equation as represented by a graph model. Students will investigate to develop the concept that solving an equation is the same as finding the point of intersection when both sides of the equation are graphed. Questions are scaffolded to build the concept from the solution of linear systems to the solution of a quadratic and linear system. Included in this activity is: ♦2 basic linear equations to investigate ♦2 challenging linear equa

Angle of Elevation and Angle of Rotation In these two playdough mats, students use playdough to practice their Angle of Rotation and Angle of Elevation skills. Because the use of playdough is “big and bold”, the teacher can easily and formatively assess student understanding. The Angle of Rotation mat has students start with color coding the initial side and terminal side of an angle. It then moves students through creating both positive and negative angles of rotation, as well as angles a

Are your students anxious for prom and having trouble focusing? Play into their excitement with this graphing activity that ties in algebra concepts to prom excitement! This activity is based on a video* that analyzes various aspects of prom. There are 7 graphs for students to interpret and sketch. Possible variations of this activity: • Give students the packet and work individually • Work on the packet in pairs/groups • Give 7 groups each one graph for them to answer, present, and take

Students struggle with proofs for many reasons. Often, when given information, they do not know where start. Students need to think that if they are proving triangles are congruent, “how can I use SSS, SAS, ASA, or AAS”. If they are showing lines are parallel on a graph, “how can I use slope”, etc. This resource can be used a variety of ways to help students determine where to go with the given information. Pages 3 & 4 can be given to students as a handout. Pages 5-8 are designed to be used

**Ready to go! No prep required! Turkey Math for Upper Levels** Are your students antsy before Thanksgiving break? Then this is the perfect activity to fill up to 2 days and still have them talking about math!! In the article A definitive ranking of Thanksgiving sides, Alex Abad-Santos, discusses various attributes of common Thanksgiving sides. He presents a variety of graphs (bar graph, circle graph, line graphs, and scatterplot) to demonstrate the comparisons. In this activity, students ar

In this technology based activity, students will use Desmos.com to gain understanding of writing equations of lines in Point Slope Form and finding Domain and Range. Students are given a link to a Desmos shooting star design which has been made with tables. They are asked to find the equation of each line used to make the design. Students are open to write equations in slope intercept form or point slope form, however, point slope form is easier for this activity. Students are also asked to

Students get thrown into a real life problem with this project! The scenario the students work through is a concrete company that has suddenly lost a vital employee. The company is in need of providing a quote to a customer ASAP for a basement, driveway, and garage floor. Students are provided with dimensions and price points for different thicknesses of concrete. Based on this information, they are to come up with a proposed price for the customer. The work doesn’t stop there! The company

Students usually catch on to factoring trinomials when the a = 1, but they have a harder time when the a does not equal 1. This factoring mat will help students organize their ideas for pairs of factors. Since factoring trinomials is often a trial and error process, it can be frustrating for students. Therefore, this mat is intended to be used as dry erase marker activity. The printed sheets can be placed in sheet protectors, or you can use more durable protectors such as these. It is als

Often students are asked to participate in fundraising to support their school and/or organizations, but how do those organizations set goals for selling? In this activity, students will use their knowledge of graphing systems of inequalities (or linear programming) to propose fundraising goals. The scenario the students work through is a real life scenario that occurred in my school. In the introduction, students brainstorm possible solutions to this problem, then the activity walks them thr

In this activity, students will analyze calories and fat fast food sandwiches. They will collect data, create a scatterplot, and generate a line of best fit. Then they will use this information to create equations in Slope Intercept Form and Point Slope Form. The equations will be used for making predictions and inferences. Students are encouraged to work in groups to collect the data to help “divide and conquer” the work. This activity can be used as an introduction to PSF and SIF or as a su

Great fall activity! In this STEAM activity, Band students and Geometry students will collaborate to learn how transformation geometry applies to marching band. Marching bands use transformations to map out their show on the field. The coordinates that are used are similar to those that are studied in Geometry, and the football field is similar to the coordinate plane. In this interdisciplinary activity, marching band students are paired up with Geometry students in order to learn from each o
